Usually when I attend a fan convention, it’s after weeks of planning and preparation leading up to the big weekend itself. MONSTERBASH (summer 2012) was a last minute decision that threw my convention(al) wisdom straight out the window! I’ve always wanted to do one of these but there were two main issues; 1) Its about a 7 hour drive from my native Chicago to Butler, Pennsylvania and certainly not a journey I relish doing alone. 2) Its slated right before July which is always the busiest convention month here in the Midwest. This requires me having to use up vacation days and resources at a time when I need to be stockpiling them in order to get through the next month. So what changed my mind?
Svengoolie’s Top TV Godzilla Moments!
I was thrilled when I heard the news that Svengoolie will be appearing at this year’s G-FEST in Chicago! For those less savvy in the Godzilla world, “G-FEST” is short for Godzilla Festival and for fans of Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, or any other facet of Kaiju (Japanese giant monster) cinema, this is the event for which we revolve our calendar around. As a life long fan of Godzilla, I was happy when my 6 year old son, Alex, took to the Big G. We attended our first G-FEST in 2004 and I haven’t missed one since!
“Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter”…The Book!
In anticipation of the upcoming film, I just finished reading “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” written by Seth Grahame-Smith and published 2010. There are countless books written about our famed 16th President, and that’s not too shocking since most historians will quickly site him as our #1 greatest leader. I do enjoy historical/political biographies, particularly those that deal with American Presidents. I’ve read several on Lincoln, though nowhere near the 16,000 that are said to exist on him. Regardless, I believe it is safe to assume that NONE of them are like this one!
Midnite Mausoleum’s “Amerisleaze”…Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Boobs!
Like every other red-blooded male horror host fan out there, I am a fan of Marlena Midnite and Robyn Graves. I have enjoyed their show a lot from the beginning and spending time with them at the Horror Hound conventions is always a highlight. If you are reading this post then chances are you are fans of Midnite Mausoleum as well.
“Prophecy”…A sleeping bag won’t save You from a Mutant Bear!
I was 8 years old when PROPHECY hit the theaters. I remember seeing a picture of the monster in one of my parent’s magazines and begging the adults in my life to take me to see it. Of course none of them would siting, “You’ll get nightmares!” Monster kids will note that this was the “You’ll shoot your eye out kid,” line handed to us with consistent regularity. It would be a full decade when, in my teenaged years, I’d finally be able to see the film on VHS. In my opinion, it was well worth the wait.
Night of the Living Legend: Mr. Mephisto Hosts Again!
In case you haven’t heard the news (which means you missed yesterday’s Weekend Horror Host Report you naughty reader), Wisconsin’s Mr. Mephisto will be making a full make-up return to hosting this Tuesday night via The Vortexx in a “Bordello of Horror” Double Feature!
