What is THE THING in Arizona!?

1b

There are few things we Daves love to see more during our travels than weird roadside attractions…and the goofier the better! For example, during this trip we got to see “The World’s Biggest Pistachio” near Alamogordo which was absolutely worth a pit stop.

A gargantuan nut, however, would pale in comparison to what we’d encounter just a couple of days later during our drive to Tucson. It actually started the night before when we hopped on Interstate 10 towards Deming and saw the first of many big yellow billboards advertising “THE THING?”

A “Sign” of Bigfoot on Pike’s Peak!

tfbtd-shrunk

The seeds for this latest Terror Dave adventure were planted during last year’s road trip while driving through Tennessee. We’d just seen a UFO house near Chattanooga when I asked the other Dave what his thoughts were about us visiting Roswell, New Mexico. After all, why should we toil in residential neighborhoods when we could go straight to the UFO capital of the world? David readily agreed so, for the next fourteen months, we saved the necessary funds while I spent hours mulling over maps, perusing websites, and thumbing through books on the region in an effort to create the perfect itinerary. I also spoke with numerous friends who were familiar with the southwest and could give me some input on what they considered to be “must see” spots.

After about ten revisions, the trip evolved from us starting with our usual drive from Chicago into our flying into Denver and renting a vehicle we’d use to cover 4,000 miles in two weeks while making our way through New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Though a pricier option, it would allow for more activities including The Grand Canyon and Rachel, Nevada a.k.a. the vicinity of Area 51.  It would also afford us time to see less grandiose attractions such as the subject of today’s post; the world’s only officially sanctioned “Bigfoot Crossing” sign.

Cryptozoology & the Possibility of Real-life Monsters!

bigfoot

If you’ve read any of our previous posts regarding visits to The International Museum of Cryptozoology (most recently David Albaugh’s story on The Minnesota Ice Man seen HERE), then you know that we Terror Daves are fans of this pseudoscience. That’s not to say we believe it all, of course, just that we’re intrigued at the possibility of strange and unusual animals still yet to be discovered. We like to keep an open mind while reminding ourselves that, though many researchers avoid the topic entirely, there are just as many credible and educated believers willing to risk their reputations by supporting it as well. And let’s be honest, who here wouldn’t love to find out that some monsters are real?

On The Trail Of The Minnesota Iceman!

cabinet-main

If you are a regular follower of the Daves then you know that we have a variety of interests with one thing in common, they borderline on the weird. Some of the things that make us happy in life are horror and science fiction movies, horror hosts, UFO’s, keeping tarantulas as pets and cryptozoology.

Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals. These are either animals that were thought to have gone extinct in the past and yet are still being seen today or they are animals that no one has ever caught or officially recorded. Most accounts are based on eyewitness testimony or out of focus photos and though many reports seem bizarre or too good to be true, once in a while a new (or old) animal is discovered (or rediscovered) proving the eyewitnesses correct.

Face to Face with Bigfoot at the International Cryptozoology Museum!

IMG_3686 (571x800)

(Continued from Sunday 9-21-14) We no sooner entered The International Cryptozoology Museum when David started photographing every inch of it. Thank the Universe for digital cameras because there was so much to see that it soon became obvious this was one attraction warranting multiple visits. What amazed me was how  they were able to display so many interesting objects of varying shapes and sizes while still managing to have it all relatively organized. I didn’t see the need for us both taking a million pictures so I decided to leave that endeavor to him while I chatted with Sarah and made my way around the building.

The International Cryptozoology Museum: You have to see it to believe it!

DSCF3938 (787x800)

Last weekend we Terror Daves met up for the second time this year and spent a few fun-filled days in New England. It’s always nice to shrink those nine hundred miles between us and enjoy some activities centered around our dual interests; animals and monsters. This latest adventure would be relatively short as I’d spent the previous week attending a zoo related conference in Florida. Shortly after my departure, temperatures north of the Mason Dixon Line plummeted and last Saturday I’d go from wearing sandals and sitting under an Orlando palm tree to wearing a sweatshirt and navigating through chilly Providence rain that same evening. Fortunately we didn’t have anything but sunshine and comfortable temps the remainder of my visit.
