John Landis’ INNOCENT BLOOD – A Not So Guilty Pleasure!

Once again John Landis has proven why he is the master of mixing horror with comedy. He did it first in 1981 with AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and he was back at it eleven years later with INNOCENT BLOOD. Things that worked in his werewolf film…things like a recognizable cast, amazing effects, fun cameos and just the right mixture of horror and comedy…work just as well when he takes on vampires. Why he isn’t making more films I will never know.

“Creepshow Expo” and the Mystery of the Travelling Ashtray!

th

Back in July I had the privilege of seeing super collector, Joe Hart’s, THING-FEST (covered HERE) at the Indianapolis Days of the Dead convention. This event featured a massive collection of props and memorabilia from one of my all-time favorite films, John Carpenter’s THE THING. During the course of the weekend, I had an opportunity to meet Hart and soon discovered that he was much more than a mere collector. Rather, I began to see him as the ultimate facilitator of sorts; bringing his fellow fans closer to the films they loved. As this is something he does without monetary gain, I feel he deserves our applause and our sincere gratitude. Trust me, folks, I’ve attended quite a few horror events since THING-FEST and would absolutely consider that one to be the most satisfying. THE THING, however, is not the only 1982 classic that Hart is devoted to…

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular: It’s a Zombie Zoo!

photo-101

Ever since zombies have effectively crawled their way into our popular culture, I’ve always wished that Hollywood would take the whole undead thing into a new direction and see what an apocalypse would look like if the only ones affected were animals. I suppose it hasn’t been tackled yet on account of such an endeavor being too costly; especially if done correctly with old school special FX and not the kind of garbage one sees on the SyFy Channel. Fortunately, the creative minds at The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island give us a gruesome taste via their annual Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular! This year features some carvings dedicated to reanimated creatures…great (like the awesome elephant pictured above) and small. Let’s take a further look…

My Lifelong Bromance with Count Chocula!

IMG_7011

Ahhh…the crunchy goodness of nostalgia in the morning!

The Halloween season is always my favorite time of year (and I’m guessing if you’re reading this blog, it’s yours too) with the leaves changing, horror movies getting a boost (though this past summer’s box office should illustrate that horror is good for ALL seasons) and happy memories of trick or treating, caramel apples, and staying up late watching monster movies.

The great thing about growing up in the ’70s, however, was that you didn’t require the veil of darkness to enjoy your favorite beasties! In October of 1971 (less than a month after my first birthday) General Mills unleashed their now legendary “monster cereals,” giving kids a comedic dose of The Universal Monsters for breakfast. At the time of their debut there were only two of them; Count Chocula (chocolate flavored and modeled after Dracula) and Franken Berry (a strawberry flavored Frankenstein) with their blueberry inspired ghostly cousin, Boo Berry showing up a couple years later.

4th of July Fireworks Herald a BUSY Horror Convention Season!

?????????

And so the busy horror convention season begins…

It’s been over three months since I returned from the Cincinnati Horrorhound Weekend and, while there hasn’t been much going on horror-wise since, it’s been pretty busy behind-the-scenes. This is in the form of a much needed period of restructuring while preparing for July. I’m not sure if everyone out there is aware of this, but July can be as busy a month as October in terms of horror activities. Lots of events and more Svengoolie too! I’ll be covering as much as I can, though my true juggling expertise shall be demonstrated on Saturday the 13th when I attempt to cover G-FEST, a zoo event, and a Svengoolie appearance all in one day. Whew!
