The Hillywood Show at the Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo (C2E2)!

Although The Hillywood Show has been around for quite some time, we clueless Daves didn’t discover them until last fall. Our fanboy lives would be forever changed when my teen daughter, Jade, introduced me to their Walking Dead parody to the tune of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” I quickly sent that along to the other Dave (David Albaugh) incorrectly assuming this was a one shot deal and having no idea of the online phenomena they were. By the time the day was out, David had already bought their autographs and t-shirts while sharing clips of their other parodies (my favorite being the Dr. WHO “Time Warp”) on social media. He’d end up writing a post about them, too (which you can read along with finding links to their parodies HERE). So when Jade expressed a desire to meet them, I requested the day off and made showing up for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo C2E2 on Friday top priority.

A Fan-Filled Friday at C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo)!

`1

This year the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) arrived a month early but, so far as we fans were concerned, not a moment too soon! In my humble opinion, this is the best comic fan expo the Windy City has to offer and one that my entire family pines for. That’s not surprising as it caters to all facets of fandom; comics, horror, science fiction, and so much more! It also attracts some amazing cosplay and I was so happy that my daughter, Jade, was there all weekend to assist with picture taking. Despite thousands of people showing up, it’s organized so well that it runs like a well-oiled machine which means less griping and more shopping. In previous years I’ve always attended Saturdays only but 2016 would have me showing up on it’s opening Friday evening. Ideally, you should devote multiple days to C2E2 as each day has its pros and cons (which I’ll delve more into later). I wasn’t sure what to expect when we arrived at the McCormick Place at 3:30pm and eagerly made our way inside.

Svengoolie and that Wacky Wrestling Fundraiser!

It’s been over a month and I’m still not sure what to make of horror host, Svengoolie’s, first 2016 appearance. On the surface it sounded like it was tailor made for me; my favorite horror host showing up at a fundraiser revolving around my favorite animals – elephants. The goal was to raise enough cash to help a lucky young lady named Desire’ travel to the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand to work with them. I suppose I should’ve guessed that a unique experience such as this would result in an equally extraordinary send off and that was definitely the case as I stepped into the VFW Hall in Summit, Illinois. It was a large room with a crowd of people, someone dressed up as an elephant, Svengoolie and his producer (Jim Roche) at a signing area, the “King of Geeks” Elliott Serrano, and a big wrestling ring in the middle.

Joe Hart’s GATE-FEST: 30 Years to Hell and Back!

5

A few years ago I had the honor of covering THING-FEST  at Days of the Dead Indianapolis where Canadian super-fan, Joe Hart, brought his immense assortment of props and collectibles associated with John Carpenter’s The Thing. Joe has a heart of gold and his enthusiasm for the movie, coupled with his enviable collection, made for one unforgettable weekend! Many of the actors from the film were on hand as well and one of my favorite moments was getting a photo with Thomas G. Waites (“Windows”) along with the actual microphone prop he’d used in the movie. I’ll always be grateful to Days of the Dead for hosting Mr. Hart as it was the magnetic pull of his collection that inspired me to cross state lines and attend!
