“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” – Book vs 1956 Movie!

Recently, while discussing film with a couple of friends, the subject of old monster movies came up. During this conversation, they were surprised to learn that I’m much less a fan of classic horror than I am of  ’50s science fiction. With all due respect to Dracula and Frankenstein, I’d much prefer watching giant-sized bugs or flying saucers.  Of course, as with any genre, some are better quality than others but I’m sure most of my fellow enthusiasts will agree that Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is somewhere at the top of their list of favorites. I do love both this version as well as its 1978 reimagining, but there’s something about the original that has me rewatching it more often. In my latest viewing, I watched the Olive Signature Blu-ray which boasts priceless commentary from its two main stars, Kevin McCarthy and Dana (pronounced Donna) Wynter. It was marvelous listening to the memories of these two late actors while gaining new insights into an old favorite. For example, I was surprised to discover that while many believe the overall story of an alien lifeform disguised as family and friends to be a metaphor for Communism, it was actually about the rise of advertising and enticing would-be consumers to be “more like their neighbors.”

During one of my weekly trips to the thrift store, I was fortunate to land an old copy of its original source material, the 1955 novel, “The Body Snatchers” by Jack Finney. When I read the first few chapters, I was impressed by how close the film adaptation was to the novel. However, after delving a bit further, things dramatically changed. Many are aware that both the beginning and end of the 1956 movie were filmed and added about six months after the film initially wrapped.  When test audiences found the original (Kevin McCarthy running down the highway yelling “You’re next!”) too abysmal, the studio decided to give it a more hopeful ending. But if you thought this version ended on a high note, it pales next to the one in the book.

Please be advised that there will be SPOILERS for both the book and the film moving forward. This post is designed for anyone who loves the movie but has no intention of reading the book. I think it provides some really interesting insights that even surprised this old viewer who has enjoyed the film for over forty years. So let’s dive in…

Sam and Mattie Make a Zombie Movie

If my memory is correct, we were in full Covid lockdown when I saw a documentary arrive on video-on-demand (VOD).  Since I now had more time to watch movies, I decided to watch it and I’m glad I did because I loved it.

The documentary is called Sam & Mattie Make a Zombie Movie! Unbeknownst to me, a few years back these young men released a film called Spring Break Zombie Massacre! This doc was about how that movie came to be. I rented it on demand and was so impressed I purchased the DVD.

MonstahXpo – a.k.a. My afternoon with the Scream Queens!

I’m happy to welcome back my friend, Jason Schoolcraft, who will be sharing his experience at a recent New England event…

Last Sunday morning, I made my way to the seaside town of Fall River, Massachusetts for my first visit to the MonstahXpo Halfway to Halloween horror event. Billed as the Ladies of Horror, it did not disappoint.  This was their 4th event at this location, and I was excited to finally experience it!

A Blog without Social Media?

Recently, I finally had the courage to do something I’ve wanted to do for years – delete my Facebook and Twitter accounts. It wasn’t to curb any addiction, since my posts were sporadic at best, and any “mindless” scrolling I indulged in scant achieved any dopamine hits psychologists speak of. Rather, I hung on because I didn’t want anyone to think I’d blocked them (hurt their feelings) when they couldn’t find me and I had this blog. As any content creator will tell you, social media is an important tool for getting your work out there. Although the number of folks who “Liked” my page was rather sparse (under 2,000), I appreciated each and every one of them because they were organic. I never have, nor ever will, pay for “likes” or “views.”

Terror from Beyond the Dave will start its lucky thirteenth year of existence this July. With over a decade of content floating around, I’m fortunate to obtain a steady number of views without having to write anything for months at a time. The ad revenue these views generate pays for my annual WordPress fees along with a little extra for a few Blu-rays if I’m lucky. However, with my social media accounts gone, and the pressure of getting people to “Like,” Subscribe,” and “Share” my content no longer of concern, I’m hoping to post more often and be more conversational while I’m at it. Hopefully, people will still manage to find me and stick around after they have.

The 2023 Svengoolie/C2E2 Diaries Day 2 – Saturday!

9:00 am: As soon as I walked onto the train station platform, I was greeted by a woman dressed as Princess Leia on Endor (holding a toddler dressed as an Ewok) and a sixty-something-year-old Brony. Clearly, I wasn’t the only one heading up to the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).  I was also happy to see my son’s girlfriend, Rachel, who’d be taking the train a little further than McCormick Place to her job at the John G. Shed aquarium. There’s nothing like good conversation to make a ride go faster.

The 2023 Svengoolie/C2E2 Diaries Day 1 – Friday!

On the morning of Friday, March, 31st, I hopped a train to McCormick Place to attend the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) armed with my camera and a printout schedule for MeTV’s National horror host, Svengoolie. In the past, I’ve covered this event, the cosplay, and celebrity guests but this year it was exclusively about Sven as his team graciously brought me in as a volunteer member of the crew. These next two blogs are a diary of that experience.
