THE AVENGERS! Fans Assemble at The Box Office!

I debated whether or not talking about THE AVENGERS was appropriate for a horror site but, as the other Dave put it, “It’s our blog and we can write whatever we want.” With that in mind I promise to never do any posts revolving around the Octomom or that new Web sensation, “The Tanning Lady” who looks like she just got booted from a minstrel show. Besides, we always thought of this site as equal opportunity for all facets of geekdom; whether horror, science fiction, fantasy, or comic books. As covered recently regarding my visit to C2E2 (see story HERE) the lines are fairly blurred and most of us are fairly eclectic in terms of our interests anyway. If that still doesn’t convince you, I should also mention that giant armored monsters do appear towards the end of this film which does sort of fall into our “Terror Dave” jurisdiction.

CHICAGO COMIC & ENTERTAINMENT EXPO (C2E2): They’re off to slay the Wizard!

In the earlier days of this site, I attended The 2010 Chicago Wizard Con (story HERE) and was not a happy camper. Granted the intense crowds did give me a bit of satisfaction knowing that, in the 15 years since I’d quit collecting comics, us geeks had clearly inherited the earth. Unfortunately, this was tempered by my perception of us fans being treated like cattle along with having to deal with their pampered celebrities. This is the first year I attended C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) and it was a last minute decision. Still recovering from Horrorhound (and, yes, we still have much more to discuss regarding that event) I had requested my C2E2 Press Pass late in the game and was surprised when it arrived last week. The event was HUGE and took place at The McCormick Place in Chicago.

CRAPPY ACTION DUDE COMICS…featuring Shaun Kangas!

Okay, this is a long and weird story……

How Crappy Action Dude Comics started, and how we got to this point, we have to go back to the year 1999. I was in a heavy metal band based out of Madison WI, and I started a graphic art business, “plan9 Productions.” We made everything from flyers to T-shirts for rock bands. I was making really funny flyers using action figures to promote them.

My band got mad with me because I was making more merchandise for other bands then for us. After many years of touring, I quit the band in 2003, and went into other entertainment fields with my connections I had made in the business. Over time I became burnt out on the crappy music scene and was doing graphic art on the side for money. Everything from TV commercials to band flyers, “plan9 Productions” cranked out a lot of stuff. This is when I started experimenting making a comic with action figures – in 2003.  I really just wanted to become better at Photoshop, and using the little toys was a great way to learn.

ROM Spaceknight: ’80s Comic Book with ’50s Sci-Fi Twist!

Attending Wizard Con last week prompted me to dig through my old comic collection where I stumbled upon a little known title called “ROM Spaceknight.” When people mention Marvel Comics they will, no doubt, immediately be reminded of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Uncanny X-Men,” or “The Mighty Avengers” – to name but a few. All of these classic titles have (or soon will see) big screen adaptations and have generated lots of merchandise. Sadly, one of their best characters never will. ROM has the distinction of starting out as a Parker Brothers toy before making his way into the Marvel universe.
