It was the day after I’d attended Flashback Weekend and I returned to pick up Brian Maze having just checked out of his hotel. Prior to flying in from his native Virginia, Brian had arranged to do a photo shoot with Krystle Street. She’d caught his eye back when she was performing on Dr. Destruction’s Crimson Theatre and Brian was determined to get her as his newest model for Maze Studios (please take the time to “Like” his Facebook page by clicking HERE). Brian had already made a name for himself as an artist (he’s responsible for the Terror Dave faces on our logo as well as having done pogs for our Horror Host Report) but lately has been focusing on his photography.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is used as the template for detectives with amazing memory, visual, and deductive skills. There have been many recent TV shows based on this type of character – “Monk”, “Psych”, “The Mentalist”, “Unforgettable”, “Lie to Me” – all shows with a lead character exhibiting hyper deductive, hyper observant skills. Even shows in the CSI realm depend on this type of behavior, although they use questionable science and computer techniques to produce such deductions. There are even two Sherlock Holmes shows set in the modern day – “Elementary” and “Sherlock”. Holmes must surely be the original!

Brian Bernardoni’s Amazing Svengoolie Yard Haunt!

Not long ago, I took the kids to see Svengoolie at a Chicago theme park called Santa’s Village (story to be covered in a future post). After the appearance ended, I decided to expand on the night’s theme by stopping off at my friend, Brian Bernardoni’s place. The kids (tired and wet from standing in line at Santa’s Village), tolerated the pit stop though I could tell they were irked. By the time the night was over, however, Brian would have successfully turned those frowns upside down by providing them with a welcome finale! Like myself, Brian’s a huge fan of Svengoolie and, like many other fellow Goolies, expresses his fandom in his own creative way.

“Creepshow Expo” and the Mystery of the Travelling Ashtray!

Back in July I had the privilege of seeing super collector, Joe Hart’s, THING-FEST (covered HERE) at the Indianapolis Days of the Dead convention. This event featured a massive collection of props and memorabilia from one of my all-time favorite films, John Carpenter’s THE THING. During the course of the weekend, I had an opportunity to meet Hart and soon discovered that he was much more than a mere collector. Rather, I began to see him as the ultimate facilitator of sorts; bringing his fellow fans closer to the films they loved. As this is something he does without monetary gain, I feel he deserves our applause and our sincere gratitude. Trust me, folks, I’ve attended quite a few horror events since THING-FEST and would absolutely consider that one to be the most satisfying. THE THING, however, is not the only 1982 classic that Hart is devoted to…
