Flashback Weekend 2023 concludes with Dick Warlock!

I had an early start that Sunday morning at Flashback Weekend loading up my car before having breakfast with my friends. The day was to be short and sweet as I’d already accomplished my convention goals save for one…meeting Dick Warlock. As mentioned in my first Flashback post, Warlock would prove something of a hidden gem at this event. Although horror fans knew him best for playing Michael Myers in Halloween II (1981), he proved to be something of a hidden gem with a rich Hollywood history as a stunt double. His resume’ had sent gasps through the audience during his Q&A session with Dick Digilio as well as providing great entertainment for his taped Svengoolie interview on Saturday. Today would be my turn to meet him.

Before he arrived, my friends and I did a final walkthrough of the main hall.

We were surprised to run into Summer;  a Flashback Weekend VIP ticket holder who also happens to moderate the panels for Days of the Dead and all their cross-country shows. As Summer explained to us, her allegiance is to horror and she has maintained her own identity outside DOTD. This is proven by her excellent work on the popular podcast, The Dolls of Horror. Summer was accompanied by one of her cohosts, Nina. and we stood near Dick Warlock’s signing booth talking while I kept vigilant for his arrival.

When Warlock showed up I was second in line which I considered a real blessing considering how long his line had been the day before.

Warlock loved talking to his fans and was happy to share some behind-the-scenes stories of filming Halloween II. He mentioned the scene where Myers attacks Nurse Jill (Tawny Moyer). She fell and hit her head during filming, causing Warlock to drop the mask and take on his other role in the production; Chief Safety Officer. “I was hoping she forgot about that incident but years later I saw her again at a horror convention and it was the first thing she brought up!” he said.

I asked him what his favorite scene in Halloween II was and he said the part where he scalds Nurse Karen in the hospital hot tub. “I knew she was topless in the scene but I couldn’t see her because of the mask and how she was positioned,” he laughed. “So I had to wait to see her naked at the theater like everyone else!”

Dick Warlock was the perfect conclusion to this amazing Flashback Weekend. He was hilarious and a tiny slice of Hollywood royalty hanging out at my favorite local horror con

I was hoping to visit Joe Bob Briggs and have him sign a Last Drive-In poster for me but he was late to his booth and I had to get home and rest up for a big work presentation the next day.

On my way out I bumped into my old pal, Russ Wrangler. Russ and I had done a few out-of-state horror cons together years back and he was a hoot to hang out with; one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met.

I hope you enjoyed my 2023 Flashback Weekend coverage. I believe the next event I’ll be covering is Nightmare on Chicago Street on October 21st as well as assisting Svengoolie again the following Saturday at the Volo Auto Museum. Hope to see you there!
