Vacation Meltdown: CHERNOBYL DIARIES!

Not long ago, I watched an interesting documentary on public television called “Radioactive Wolves” which dealt with Chernobyl – site of the infamous Russian nuclear reactor meltdown that occurred over 25 years ago. Contrary to what you may think, its apparently become something of a paradise, as nature has reclaimed the territory; seeing the return of wolves, bears, bison, and even wild horse. Thanks to the help of a team of eager beavers, much of man’s irrigation has been undone and large portions of the territory have become lush swampland (which they’d been prior to human tampering) once more. Before you start booking your next eco-tourist vacation, however, I should mention that there’s a slight catch…its still radioactive.

This doesn’t stop of group of young travelers in Hollywood’S latest film, CHERNOBYL DIARIES, who aren’t interested in its wildlife (though they’ll unwittingly get a taste of it) as they are in partaking in an “Extreme Tour.” This is a term used for would be thrill-seekers who’d rather check out more infamous travel spots. While I never got a chance to see any of the shop’s brochures, I imagine some of “Extreme” trips offered may include a luxurious stay in North Korea, a safari ride in DAR 4, and a “Call of Duty” paintball fight in Saudi Arabia. Visiting the site of one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters proves too tempting for one of the guys in the troop, as well as his photographer gal pal who can’t think of a better way to get unique shots for her Russian scrapbook. They convince their friends to forgo their planned visit to Moscow in favor of this locale.

While Chernobyl may be unfit for human habitation, tour guide “Uri” assures his clients that it’s safe enough for a day trip. Hopping on board his make-shift “Mystery Machine” (that looks as if its being held together by spit and gum), they disregard warnings that they aren’t permitted to enter by taking a covert short cut. After getting a glimpse of the city of Pripyat, where the workers of Chernobyl had lived and were forced to immediately evacuate, the group gets jolted by one of the aforementioned animals and decides to call it a day. Unfortunately, they discover that their vehicle has been tampered with and they are stuck in this eerie ghost town with nobody having a clue that they are even there.

Soon nightfall hits and things take an even more sinister turn. Throughout the film, you are never quite sure if their enemy is natural, supernatural, or perhaps something entirely different. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I worried it was going to be yet another entry in the POV style of film-making that worked with THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY before winding its way down to the crappy DEVIL INSIDE (that one was recently released on DVD and, if you’re thinking of renting it, I urge you to read my review HERE first). I am happy to say that this is not a POV film, though much of the filming certainly gives it the feel of one.

Although I liked the overall premise (which immediately took me in when I saw the trailer a month ago) I was less impressed with the directing. By the film’s second half, I wasn’t quite sure where this movie was going and my mind started wandering. The acting is decent but, while Chernobyl may be great for a gritty photography exhibition, its far from ideal in terms of big screen cinematography. That being said, you can safely wait and see this one on home video.

One thing I was pleased to see while attending this movie was a preview of the upcoming ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER dealing with America’s most famous President battling the undead in a prelude The Civil War. Now there’s an eco-tourist location you can sink your teeth in!

Though the official start of summer is just under a month away, Memorial Day Weekend has always been considered the start of summer. Most of the United States has been experiencing summer-like weather for quite some time now and to be honest, I am not complaining one bit. Even though we now tend to be outdoors more often enjoying the weather, our favorite horror hosts are still busy at work producing new shows and making appearances throughout the United States. So, after you are done with your outdoor activities, it is time to get in front of your television or computer monitor and check out what these talented people have to offer! You will not be disappointed!

This week on Zomboo’s House Of Horror Movies is one of the scaariest movies ever made…The Bloody Vampire! This film was made in Mexico in 1962. The English language version was released in America in 1965. Good guy Count Cagliostro and his band of merry Mexican vampire hunters find out that the evil Count Frankenhausen lives next door to him! So, he sends his daughter Anna, disguised as a servant girl, to work in Count Frankenhausen’s mansion. Now, Count Frankenhausen likes to put the bite on his pretty servant girls, so when he sees Anna, he rises to the occasion! The Bloody Vampire stars Carlos Agosti, Bertha Moss, Erna Bauman, Raul Farell, and Begona Palacios.

The Summer is here! The Gypsy Museum of the Macabre hits the road! This Saturday we play the Brass Monkey in Racine. The tour begins with the Die Monster Die and the Haunted Bus! Dates are filling up fast this year. On the Bigtop Radio broadcast the long awaited interveiw with Mr Halloween Jack. Of course we are in the state of recalls. Athough Godzilla won his battle with Mecha-Godzilla last week on Crimson Theatre, a recall is in effect. Terror Of Mecha-Godzilla is this week’s movie. It seems political turmoil is alive in Japan as well.

Now, the accidents know, we’re not against strippers. Hey, if someone wants to waste their money pursuing a fantasy, how are we to stop them, right?

However, when a person strips and you see nothing, well even we think there is something wrong about that.

My friend Joe has a great idea we should all consider on doing. Here is his proposal:

Hello my name is Joe Proffitt, and I am interested in designing a booklet with illustrations of current and past Horror Hosts. I am a Cincinnati artist specializing in portraits. At the most recent Horrorhound in Columbus, Ohio, I presented several directors, actors, and actresses with pieces I created depicting their most famous films.

In regards to this project, I would love to create a booklet that will show my immense respect to the Horror Host community; I grew up watching Elvira and the Cool Ghoul, and I continue to watch today. I have contacted several current Hosts and have their support in a project such as this. Because of the sheer volume of Hosts to include, I would like to start immediately. I will have it completed before the Indianapolis Horrorhound in September 2012. Upon approval of this project, I will provide a more in depth plan which will include distribution of the booklet and its cost.

I would absolutely love to take on this project. As a lifetime fan of the genre of horror, and its Hosts, it would definitely be an honor to be able to show respect to your art.

Saturday (5/26). 10:00 P.M. THE LATE DR LADY SHOW with special guest Sluggo Gonzales presents the Vortexx premiere of a brand-new, never-before-seen episode — OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES (1981). An expedition searching for gold hidden by Field Marshall Rommel come up against an army of Nazi Zombies. Directed by Jess Franco, who also appears as a zombie.

Saturday (5/26). Midnight. SATURDAY NIGHT SERIALS with Mortimer Van Creep presents Chapter 2 of THE MONSTER AND THE APE (1945) starring Metalogen Man as The Monster and Thor (Crash Corrigan) as The Ape. This show was a great hit when it debuted last Saturday, so check it out!

Monday (5/28). 9:00 P.M. ALTERNATIVE REALITIES with Dr. Sigmund Zoid presents CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN (1943). In his first starring role, John Carradine plays Dr. Sigmund Walters — a mad scientist who turns a female gorilla into the beautiful Acquanetta. Problem is, when sexually aroused, this gorgeous dame becomes a hairy snarling killer! Co-starring Milburn Stone (Doc on “Gunsmoke”).

Tuesday (5/29). 9:00 P.M. LENNY’S INFERNO starring MR. MEPHISTO presents THE SCREAMING SKULL (1958). A newlywed couple’s marital bliss is spoiled by the ghost of the husband’s previous wife. Is the ghost for real, or is the new wife simply going out of her mind? The producers of this movie offered free burial services to anyone who died of fright while watching the film, so we’re gonna make the same offer!

Tuesday (5/29). 11:00 P.M. BORDELLO OF HORROR with Freakshow and Sin-D Vicious presents THE KILLER SHREWS (1959). On an isolated island, a small group of people are terrorized by giant voracious shrews in the midst of a hurricane. Who cares if the shrews are really coon dogs with rugs attached to them? This is a highly entertaining movie! Produced by, and co-starring, Ken Curtis, who would later achieve fame as Festus in the long-running TV series, “Gunsmoke.”

Wednesday (5/30). 9:00 P.M. THE ANGRY BROS OMAHA SHOCK O RAMA returns to The Vortexx! It should really help those that don’t have a regular website so they can better keep in touch with the fans.

Hosts can moderate their own forum, write articles, post about their events and shows, share ideas, etc.

The Daves would like to welcome The Angry Bros to our weekly report! The Angry Brothers Omaha Shock O Rama runs on Saturday Mornings @ 1am on Cox Cable Public Access Channel 109. They started the show in May of 2011 and began filming in Oct of 2011, The cast includes Brother Jack Angry (Les Raub), Brother James Angry (Lane Raub), ASH THE DEVIL SISTER (Samantha Gunia), Inferna (Bridget Coffey) and Ghoulia (Brook Devine).

The plot of the show features the angry brothers, two undead monks (although James fancies himself more of a hipster), their Demonic Sidekick/employee/Gal Friday Ash and Inferna aka The Cougar from Hell/Hells HR person and Ghoulia the Zombie Chef and their misadventures working down below as demonic agents bringing down western society. Jack is an everyman character who has come back to earth from Hell with a job to do and a specific set of orders but decides to run things his own way. James, his younger brother, follows him (more like they were kicked out of Hell for being lazy screw ups). James likes to drink and gamble too much and has a tendency to make bad bets with the worst sort of people. This causes him to have to go on the lam to avoid being killed again. Ash was a female demon summoned by James to clean up and look after the guys but as things unfolded she has other ideas and a passion for corsets. Inferna was sent from Hell to make sure they are following the rules, but likes to party too much also.

GIANT INSECT INVASION AT BROOKFIELD ZOO!

Last weekend, Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo unveiled its new X-TREME BUGS exhibit, a temporary attraction that will be open through September 7th!

Giant insects and arachnids have a proud history in cinema and I’ve always been a huge fan of them! And also a huge fan of THEM (1954)…

The 1950′s was the Golden period for these type of films with the United States officially entering the Atomic Age! Man’s splitting of the Atom meant that all bets were off so far as nature was concerned and this made the small invertebrates bigger and badder! One of my all-time favorites is 1957′s THE DEADLY MANTIS!

Giant bees also made a debut in 1961′s MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. They would later receive numerous starring roles on a “smaller” scale in the 1970′s amid the panic of the famed killer bees – a human experiment gone awry when cross-breeding the European honey bee with the African variety (truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction).

Of course The United States was not the only country to jump on board the giant bug bandwagon! Japan’s Godzilla had his work cut out for him dealing with one of his most prolific adversaries (and occasional ally) MOTHRA!

And lets not forget our arachnid friends who also got some screen time such as 1957′s THE BLACK SCORPION…

Giant spiders were another popular feature, most notably 1955′s TARANTULA and 1958′s EARTH VS THE SPIDER!

Of course these are but a few examples of what X-TREME BUGS has to offer! They also move, make noises, and (in the case of the stink bug) emit foul odors! There’s plenty of fun activities as well as educational features that make this exhibit a winner along with some living specimens too!

Hollywood, you sunk my BATTLESHIP!

Last Saturday, after viewing THE AVENGERS for the fourth time, my friend and I were having so much we grabbed a bite to eat and returned to the theater again to check out the latest offering, BATTLESHIP. This movie is in fact based on the popular board game from “back in the day” but with an extra-terrestrial slant.

Taylor Kitsch plays Alex Hooper, a guy whose juvenile shenanigans leads his older brother, Stone (played by TRUE BLOOD‘s Alexander Skarsgard) to direct him to the US Navy. I’m not exactly sure how the Navy figures out its ranking system but somehow Alex goes from being captain of the Naval soccer team to a full Lieutenant within a year. This is particularly amazing since he has also established himself as a monumental screwball who never gets a chance to ask Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson) if he can marry his daughter because he’s too busy being reprimanded by him instead. As it turns out, this is the least of his problems!

Elsewhere in Hawaii…a group of scientists had sent out a homing signal in an attempt to establish contact with a distant planet that was deemed “Earth-like.” I always thought these signals were invisible but, according to this film, they are more like SUPER lasers that blast from Earth like the one emitted from The Death Star when it was trashing Alderaan. Unfortunately they manage to crank call the wrong aliens who, now alert to our existence, decide to launch an attack.

The alien ships are total TRANSFORMERS rip-offs and them standing toe to toe with an old school Naval blockade seems as uneven a match as COWBOYS VS ALIENS but with much less entertaining results. This movie was, in many ways, a Scy Fy Channel TV movie tossed on the big screen. Cheesy dialogue as well as characters secondary to too much CGI-candy. In fact there are so many CGI explosions in this film that the viewer becomes desensitized to them by the end (assuming your still in the theater). At one point, the film plot does mirror the actual vintage game its modeled after but its so darn obvious that it incites laughter as opposed to nostalgia.

The film boasts pop/R&B princess, Rhianna, who makes her big screen debut. Suffice it to say, her Grammy Award shelf is in no danger of being invaded by “Oscar.” In her defense, however, she isn’t given much to work with. The dialogue is straight out of a can and even the great Liam Neeson does so much work concealing his Irish accent, he manages to create an entirely new one!

The film does show a lot of respect for the US military (a rarity in Hollywood these days) I just wish that the overall material could have been equally as complimentary. Instead you sometimes feel you’re watching a 1940′s Naval promotion video that’s every bit as convincing in today’s world as “Duck n Cover!” This movie also features real-life WWII veterans as well more recent soldiers such as a man who lost both his legs in a 2007 roadside bomb. Prior to the events of this film, he also lost his will to live but, like Lt. Hooper,soon discovers that there’s nothing like a good old fashioned alien invasion to help you put life into perspective!

The aliens, when revealed, are far too computerized and their overall design uninspiring. Once they take to land, the viewer is less reminded of THE TRANSFORMERS and more of a video game, specifically, HALO. After my experience last Saturday I can only offer readers this advice…

Better to go to the theater and watch THE AVNEGERS a 4th time than BATTLESHIP for the first!

2012 Horror Host Hall of Fame Induction: The Shock Theater Package!

Well, gang, this is our final post regarding the Ohio 2012 Horrorhound Weekend before we aim our focus at future events! As mentioned prior to this gathering, David and I were asked by Jason Hignite to participate in this year’s Horror Host Hall of Fame ceremony by doing an induction of our own. Not for a specific host, but for a unique package of films that lead to their proliferation.

For those who may have missed it, the full story of this event will be covered in an upcoming issue of Scary Monsters Magazine and written by yours truly. Its already been submitted/approved though I have no idea how publisher Dennis Druktenis will be able to fit it all in one Scary issue as, when printed, it took up about nine pages not counting photos. We will definitely keep you posted as to when that story gets published. Below is a special “sneak peak” featuring our portion of the event…

In 1957, Universal Studios released 52 (one for each week of the year) of their wonderful monster classics to commercial TV stations. I am, of course, referring to The Shock Theater Package! At the time, many stations made the historic decision of having these films presented by a horror host.

This was beneficial to stations for two main reasons; for one thing, nervous station managers weren’t sure how the general public would react to these films and felt having a host present them would alleviate some of their fears (remember this is the 50′s). Another advantage of a host was that they could help fill up the time that shorter films and their commercial sponsors could not. For the next 30 years horror hosts would introduce many if us monster kids to these fantastic films before their near annihilation at the hands of corporate TV who began swallowing local channels.

After a brief introduction by Jason Hignite, David and I were up first to induct these films. Prior to this big moment, David and I planned on rehearsing our speech on the long ride from Chicago to Ohio. Instead we found ourselves chatting about almost everything else, but. Ready or not, we nervously made our way up the stage.

Whatever apprehension we may have felt initially soon dissipated at the sight of our macabre audience; a room full of horror hosts as well as host fans such as ourselves. The realization that this was definitely our crowd suddenly made it less about “public speaking” and more like addressing ones own family (albeit more “Adams Family” than “Brady Bunch” but we aren’t complaining).

David reminded everyone of those bygone days of of fighting with our rabbit ear antennae in an effort to alleviate the “snow” on our UHF stations so we could watch our hosts present these great films. We also made a point of mentioning how, during the 1990′s when horror hosting was nearly obsolete, these films were kept on life support by us die-hard fans as well as periodicals – the best example of which I mentioned earlier and will rightfully have the FULL induction story.

Last Spring, our childhood host, Chicago’s Svengoolie, went national via MeTV and (as of this date) is being aired in most of The United States as well as parts of Canada.

As Sven had been presenting many of these Universal classics prior to his ascension, they too would be joining him on the national stage. Consequently, many of original “Shock Theater Package” films can now be enjoyed, once more, on Saturday night commercial television! This will create new opportunities for younger fans (who wouldn’t otherwise seek them out) to discover these classic monsters for the very first time.

Therefore even in an age where you can streamline these films or purchase them online, it is still the horror host that remains their greatest ambassador.

The English language version was released in America in 1965. Samson, the pot-bellied wrestler, should have hung it up after beating up on the vampire women, but he didn’t, so now he has to battle the infamous Dr. Karol, who is up to no good in the basement of the wax museum. Samson in the Wax Museum stars Santo, the former Mexican Wrestling Champion, Claudio Brook, Ruben Rojo, Jose Jimenez, and Roxana Bellini.

Friday (5/18). Midnight. It’s the Sick Birthday Blowout! DOKTOR SICK celebrates his birthday with a delicious little concoction he calls FANGS OF THE LESBIAN VAMPIRE — a mash-up of Amando de Ossorio’s “Fangs of the Living Dead” (1969) and Jesus Franco’s “Vampiros Lesbos” (1971).

Saturday (5/19). 10:00 P.M. THE LATE DR LADY SHOW presents SNOW BEAST (1977). Big bad Bigfoot (well, actually his distant cousin) terrorizes a ski resort during a winter carnival and completely disrupts the Snow Queen ceremony. How rude! Shot on location in the scenic Colorado Rockies, this made-for-television movie stars Bo Svenson, Clint Walker, and blonde bombshell Yvette Mimieux.

Saturday (5/19). Midnight. Join us after the Dr. Lady Show for the premiere of SATURDAY NIGHT SERIALS hosted by our good friend Mortimer Van Creep. Tonight we’ll see the first chapter of THE MONSTER AND THE APE (1945) starring Metalogen Man as The Monster and Thor (Crash Corrigan) as The Ape. B-movie veteran George Macready plays the villainous Professor Ernst.

Monday (5/21). 9:00 P.M. Monday night is Zoid Night in The Vortexx! Join us tonight as ALTERNATIVE REALITIES with Dr. Sigmund Zoid presents KRONOS (1957). In this classic sci-fi thriller, a giant asteroid crashes into the ocean nearMexico. Next thing you know, this 100-foot-tall robot comes out of the ocean and heads straight forLos Angeles. Will LA traffic be able to slow the big guy down? This is a very good movie, folks, with a top-notch score and tons of neat special effects.

Tuesday (5/22). 9:00 P.M. LENNY’S INFERNO starring MR. MEPHISTO presents THE BAT (1959), with Vincent Price, Agnes Moorehead, and Darla (Little Rascals) Hood. A crazed killer known as “The Bat” is on the loose in a mansion full of people! Vinnie is the prime suspect, and Darla is one of the victims.

Tuesday (5/22). 11:00 P.M. BORDELLO OF HORROR with Freakshow and his luscious new co-host Sin-D Vicious presents I EAT YOUR SKIN (1964). A mad doctor uses radioactive snake venom to produce zombies with fried-egg eyes and crusty faces. Despite the title, no skin is actually eaten in this movie!

Wednesday (5/23). 9:00 P.M. THE SCHLOCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW with Nigel Honeybone presents the Vortexx premiere of WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) starring Bela Lugosi. It’s the first zombie movie ever — and still arguably one of the best! Although it’s not a Universal movie, large portions of the film were shot on the Universal Studios lot, borrowing many props and scenery from other horror films of the era.

Thursday (5/24). 10:00 P.M. SHOCKING THEATER with Justy Ghost presents THE SAVIOR OF THE EARTH (1983). Our three heroes — Dr. Kim, Sheila, and Keith — get sucked into a video game and encounter the evil Dr. Butler, who plans to take over the world. Justy has described this South Korean animated film as “a TRON knockoff with a little Captain Harlock thrown in for good measure.” Don’t say you haven’t been warned!

From the Lighthouse he hosts Ormsby’s Cinema Insane (www.cinemainsane.com), which started on the internet in February of 2010. Ormsby is an authority on cloning, horror movies, and cute red heads.

Ormsby liked the new Dark Shadows movie, mostly because the vampires didn’t sparkle.

I’ve just launched the “Horror Host Alliance” web site. It’s for hosts and fans. This is to bring together people in the horror host community.

It should really help those that don’t have a regular website so they can better keep in touch with the fans.

Hosts can moderate their own forum, write articles, post about their events and shows, share ideas, etc.
