“Tooth And Claw” – A BOOK TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO!

Just recently I was checking out a favorite website of mine, DREAD CENTRAL, and they made mention of a book that really interested me. I have always been a huge fan of movie guides, especially those that concentrate on one type of movie, as opposed to an all-encompassing volume covering all types of movies. This particular book also struck a nerve because it specifically covered one of my all time favorite types of movies, the man vs. nature film. This type of film is no stranger to Terror From Beyond The Daves; in fact to date we have done two When Animals Attack blogs covering man vs. nature films. The first can be seen HERE and the second one HERE. Finally there is also a very well  book covering these very same films!

GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE on Blu-Ray!!!

I have been a Godzilla fan for as long as I can remember. Weekends were always a treat for me growing up as there was almost always a Godzilla or Gamera movie to be found and I would watch these films over and over again, never growing bored with them. As an adult I still very much enjoy these films, perhaps because they do in fact bring me back to a simpler time in my life. I am a Godzilla completist, which means I must own every film in its best possible form. To date all movies are now available officially on DVD or Blu-Ray, with the exception of THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, aka GODZILLA 1985. The sequel to this film, GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE finally just got its official release on Blu-Ray and though I was hesitant with this release, I must say, after viewing it, it is a must have for any Godzilla collection.

AURORA MONSTER MODEL KITS – Gone But Certainly Not Forgotten

auroramodelkits_collection

Growing up I wasn’t actually a monster fan until I was in my early teens. I will always remember though around when I was 7 I received an Aurora Dracula model kit (and my brother got the Frankenstein kit). These kits had the glow in the dark feature and there were times I would lay in bed at night watching them glow, wondering if they would attack me when I fell asleep. Thankfully they did not and these kits may have actually have been what lead me to my love of all things monsters.

DAVID A’S LIST OF 13 MUST HAVE BLU-RAY STOCKING STUFFERS!

*

This past year or so has featured many amazing blu-ray releases that will make great gifts for that genre fan in your life. This was not an easy list to compile since there are so many great releases to choose from! I also wanted to limit myself to 13 titles, or else this list would’ve just gone on and on. I am a huge fan of the blu-ray format but have noticed that just because something is on blu-ray and says it is in high-definition, does not mean it is actually going to look good! It all depends on the source used for the transfer. When I watch a blu-ray, I want to feel like I am seeing the film for the first time, even if I have seen it multiple times before. This list is of blu-ray releases that did just that! ENJOY!

DARK SHADOWS: THE VISUAL COMPANION! A must have for all Dark Shadows fans!!!

As I write this everyone is in full swing Christmas mode which is perfect as what I present to you is the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for individual in your life who also happens to be a Dark Shadows fan. Growing up I never watched the original Dan Curtis television series and have yet to attempt to watch it now. It does though have a very loyal following and I am sure it will be around for a very long time. This past year showed the release of Tim Burton’s interpretation of the classic soap opera starring one of his regulars, Johnny Depp.

SVENGOOLIE Hosts CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON 3D!

*
After getting only a few hours of sleep (due to being out so late the night before at the amazing Nightmare on Chicago Street), it was time to embark on yet another Sven-adventure! This final stop on the “Svengoolie 2012 Halloween Tour” took place up in Rosemont, Illinois at The Muvico Theater. It was here that national horror host, Svengoolie, would present the Universal classic, THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, in 3D and on the BIG screen!

MISS ZOMBIE 2012 and SVENGOOLIE’S NEW COFFIN: Nightmare on Chicago Street Finale!

*
Alex and I quickly navigated through crowds of monsters and maniacs as we made our way from Svengoolie’s signing to the The Nightmare on Chicago Street’s main stage. I’d forgotten my map but one needed only a pair of working ears to determine which way to go. Echoing throughout the event was the featured band, “Hairbanger’s Ball” performing 1980′s rock hits. It wasn’t long until I was reunited with my friends amid a cover of Warrant’s “Cherry Pie.”

NIGHTMARE ON CHICAGO STREET: Svengoolie arrives!

*
I was standing outside in the cold waiting for Svengoolie to begin greeting his fans at The Nightmare on Chicago Street when the door to the abandoned theater he’d be appearing at suddenly opened and I was summoned inside. It was Sven’s erstwhile assistant (and Horror Host Secret Service Agent), Jim Roche. We’d chatted earlier that day during the host’s appearance at “Bark-O-Ween” (story HERE) and Jim honored me further by allowing me to go backstage so we could hang out some more.

NIGHTMARE ON CHICAGO STREET: Fans Dressed to KILL!

*
As mentioned in a previous post (seen HERE), The Nightmare on Chicago Street  in Elgin, Illinois really brought out a wide range of fans who expressed their Halloween spirit by dressing up in some highly creative costumes.

Here are some examples…

NIGHTMARE ON CHICAGO STREET: A Horror Fan Dream Come True!

The silence of a crisp October night is rattled by the sounds of marching soldiers as military personnel survey the bedlam. The town’s once idyllic streets are now strewn with wrecked vehicles, scattered debris, and even rotting corpses. As you move further down the road (your brain trying to process what your eyes can’t possibly be witnessing) you observe terrified locals scurrying in panic followed by yet another group of terrestrials; this second wave decisively less agile than the first. Moments later, as they amble their way into view, you realize that these really aren’t people at all…

At least not anymore.

It isn’t long before you notice the visible wafts of mist (created by your own erratic breathing in the cold night air) has increased; your heart pumping in tandem. This is a natural physical response when one discovers that they are in a decidedly unnatural situation. By then, of course, it’s too late.

You’ve unwittingly gone from casual observer to active participant in a town now overrun by the walking dead.

ROCK AND SHOCK REMEMBERED

Conventions in the New England area are few and far between. Luckily though we do have one that comes back every year…ROCK AND SHOCK. Though small compared to conventions like HorrorHound Weekend, it still attracts the very best in horror and science fiction and is a guaranteed good time. Unfortunately, this year the Daves were unable to attend but thanks to their friend Brock Papineau, we are able to bring you a series of pictures to show you some of the great talent this convention draws!!! We want to thank Brock for these pics! ENJOY!

A “Flashback” All Over Again: Svengoolie At Flashback Weekend! by Jamie Lee Cortese

This was actually my second visit to the Flashback Weekend convention, and, in many ways, it was a “flashback” to my experience the previous year; however, it was even more fun the second time around!

I arrived at the convention just after it opened on Saturday morning.  As soon as I was in, I found out where Svengoolie would be signing later that day, and started browsing the vendor room.

As I perused the many diverse and unique tables, I saw a face that is likely familiar to anyone who’s attended a convention in the Chicagoland area…

“Body of a killer.  Mind of a puppy.”  It’s the always-fun Kitty Zombie!

I took the BAIT! You should too!

Just recently I made the expensive though right decision to upgrade my tv and blu-ray player to those that play 3-D. Because of this I am on the constant lookout for anything being released in 3-D and just recently a new film was released on blu-ray that looked promising, especially since it was receiving decent reviews on both Netflix and Amazon. This movie is the Australian shark movie BAIT!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES!

I just want to wish our very own Dave Fuentes a VERY Happy Birthday today!!! Make sure you do too!!!

DAYPLANNER OF THE DEAD!!!

If you attend horror events on a regular basis, sooner or later you’ll run into a t-shirt that reads:  “I’d rather see a bad zombie movie than no zombie movie at all.”  Filmmakers seem more than aware of that mindset, and they flood the market with zombie films that seem designed to be exactly that.  But a group of filmmakers in Michigan are ready to break the mold this October when they begin shooting their new comedy, Dayplanner of the Dead.

JAWS: The Blu-Ray Review by Richard Church

Well, so much for spooking anyone from swimming in the ocean, as fall is effectively upon us. Don’t blame the Daves though, as the tardiness of this review falls entirely on my head. I’ll start out by saying this is the best-looking Blu-ray I have ever seen, and that isn’t because it is also, hands down, my favorite film. In this day and age, I highly doubt this is necessary, but beware of spoilers to come.

WHAT LURKS BEHIND THE MASK?

As summer comes to an end and Fall sets in, Halloween becomes the next big event on many calendars. It takes time and effort to choose and prepare the perfect costume for this legendary Fright Night. Whilst some pride themselves on top make-up skills, others will find a mask is the perfect finishing touch to their outfit.

Masks are no costume cop-out, in fact they have been used to disguise and entertain for thousands of years.

PARANORMAN – A review by Shaun “Genghis” Kangas

Over the weekend I made it a mission to see the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman. Since I do a 3-dimentional web comic using real models, I especially wanted to see this film. It seems that stop-motion animated films are rare with what Pixar and computer animation can do these days, and they take tremendous amounts of time to film. Before the film started, two trailers for upcoming animated horror styled films, Frankenweenie and Hotel Transylvania, tells me that animated horror kids films now are a genre.
